Citizenship Application

There are four ways Greek citizenship may be obtained.

Greek citizenship by descent

To qualify for obtaining Greek citizenship by descent one must show proof that they are either born to at least one Greek parent or are of descent of a Greek citizen – up to the third generation. These people are considered Greek Omogenia and are holders of the “Special Identity Card for Aliens of Hellenic Descent”.

The Omogenia can either obtain Greek citizenship when they have resided in Greece for at least 3 years or in the case they reside abroad they can send in an application through their country’s consulate.

Greek citizenship through naturalization

One can apply for Greek citizenship by naturalization if he resides legally in Greece for seven (7) years and meets one of the following conditions:

a. To have sufficient knowledge of the Greek language, in order
to fulfill the obligations arising from the
status of a Greek citizen.
b. To know sufficiently the Greek history and geography, the Greek culture, and the habits of the Greek people, as well as the way of functioning of the institutions of the state of Chora.
c. To have the ability to participate actively and effectively in the political life of the country, respecting the fundamental principles that govern it.
d. To have integrated smoothly into the economic and social life of the country, having made it a continuous center of its vital activities

Greek citizenship by birth and study

Citizenship is granted to children born in Greece after they obtain a Certificate of enrollment-attendance of the 1st grade of Greek primary school.

Greek citizenship through studies
  1. Completed successful attendance of either nine grades of primary and secondary education or six grades of secondary education of a Greek school in Greece and is a minor at the time of submitting the application-application.
  2. Greek Citizenship due to Graduation from a department or School of a Greek University or TEI

Residence Permit Application, Renewal & Appeals

There are numerous ways for non-EU citizens to obtain the right to legally reside in Greece, including:

  • Residence permit for work purposes
  • Residence permit for studies, voluntary work, research and vocational training
  • Residence permit for family reunion
  • Residence permit for self-employed entrepreneurs
  • Residence permit for humanitarian, exceptional and other reasons
  • Long-term residence permit

Golden Visa Greece Program

The Greek Golden Visa is a permanent residence permit granted to non-EU investors and their families. This permit has a duration of 5 years and can be renewed in perpetuity granted that the conditions set by law are met each time.

There are several types of investment that can qualify you for a Golden Visa.

Digital Nomad Visa

Third-country nationals who work remotely either as dependent employees or self-employed persons can live in Greece with a Digital Nomad Visa. This visa gives the holder the right to legally reside in Greece without access to the local labor market.

The Digital Nomad Visa is issued for 12 months to people who can prove that they have sufficient funds, amounting to a minimum of 3,500 net income per month. This amount is increased by 20% for the spouse or cohabitant and by 15% for each child.

FIP Program

The Financially Independent Persons Visa addresses non-EU citizens who have sufficient financial resources to cover their living expenses in Greece without being employed in the Greek labor market.

The FIP Residency Permit is issued for a period of 2 years and can be extended if the applicant continues to fulfill the requirement of having a minimum income of €2,000 per month. This amount increases by 20% for an accompanying spouse and 15% for each child.
